Creation and Healing of Surface Defects

EMSL Project ID
2361

Abstract

With EMSL Staff, we will study the creation and healing of defects on the surface of rutile TiO2 by irradiation with UV light and reaction with light molecules. The surface structure and composition will be measured before, during, and after irradiation and reaction in order to determine the physics and chemistry associated with the photo-induced defects. Once the photophysics for this system is confirmed, comparison will be made with strontium titanate (STO), which may exhibit similar physics due to similar surface termination.
