Understanding and Development of Novel NanoMaterials for Frequency Upconversion

EMSL Project ID
24804

Abstract

The use of luminescence spectroscopy to study the upconversion luminescence in various semiconductor and doped nanomaterials is proposed. By controlling key parameters such as surface modification, particle size, dopant, and host material, increased understanding into the photo-physical processes governing excitation, energy transfer, and upconversion luminescence can result in the production of highly efficient, environmentally friendly materials for applications such as solid-state lighting and biological sensors. In particular, the effects of interface and surface states on these processes will be studied to guide in the development of new materials.
