Cellular responses to ionizing radiation as examined by FTIR.

EMSL Project ID
2520

Abstract

Currently, the standards for human exposure to ionizing radiation are set by extrapolating data obtained in the high-dose regime to the low-dose regime where the biological responses are below standard detection limits and capabilities with the assumption that the deleterious responses occur primarily in cells that are directly damaged by radiation. This project will look at low-LET radiation induced changes in protein, lipid and carbohydrate bands using FTIR spectrometry. Following initial characterization of the dose response to gamma radiation, the electron microbeam will be used as the source of low-LET radiation. We will look for changes in the induced responses as a function of initial electron energy.
