Preparing specimens for the scanning electron microscope with Jim Young

EMSL Project ID
2541

Abstract

Thanks to Battelle, Columbia Basin College has a scanning electron microscope (SEM). However, we do not have the equipment to prepare biological specimens. I hope that, working with Jim Young, students may learn to prepare specimens for the SEM and prepare enough specimens that other classes may use them. In addition, we are working on the ecology of a sidestream of the Yakima River and it would be especially useful if we could prepare some of the specimens we collect there. Finally these students have been doing another study oo a ?listed? soil lichen found in the Horse Heave Hills. This lichen has a spore that is unlike any other found in fungi or lichens, and it would be useful to prepare some specimens from this organism.
