Ice Nucleation on Aged Field Aerosols
EMSL Project ID
25452
Abstract
The number, density, and lifetime of clouds are strongly dependent on the kind of aerosol particles that are present, that act as "cloud nucleation centers" (CNC). This is one of the major uncertainties in predicting climate change. High tropospheric clouds and stratospheric cirrus clouds will nucleate directly to solid ice. We will study in the lab aerosol samples taken in the field, in a special mini-flow-reactor, so as to ascertain how the particles' ability to act as CNC's is altered by aging, and with the addition of secondary aerosol sulfate materials. This will be done from 200 to 273 K.
