Solid State 11B-NMR Analysis of the Decomposition Products of Ammonia-borane Thermolysis in Ionic Liquids for Hydrogen Storage

EMSL Project ID
29405

Abstract

We propose to investigate the decomposition products of the thermolysis of ammonia-borane in ionic liquids by solid state 11B-NMR . Ammonia-borane/ionic liquid mixtures have previously been shown to release significant amounts of hydrogen under mild conditions. We have improved upon out initial reports in various ways, e.g altering the reaction conditions or ionic liquid used, and by the addition of catalysts. Ammonia-borane appears to decompose through a different reaction pathway in ionic liquid compared to other mediums. However, it is difficult to investigate this pathway by more traditional techniques due to the insolubility of the "BNH" reaction residues. Therefore, solid state 11B-NMR experiments must be run at a sufficiently high field where the secondary quadrapole coupling is removed.
