Identification of Precipitates and Chemistry of Interfaces in Optical Materials

EMSL Project ID
30450

Abstract

This proposal is focused on using EMSLs advanced characterization tools, particularly the recent FIB/SEM instrument, to conclusively identify second phase precipitates and grain boundary adsorbates in materials used in optical applications. The materials of interest are primarily those used in solid state lasers used for spectroscopy and subsequent environmental characterization. However, the students and faculty on this project will use the basic scientific information for the primary system of interest as well as furthering our understanding of other optical materials.
