Orientation Studies of Lead Magnesium Niobate - Lead Titanate (PMN-PT) Single Crystal by X-Rays

EMSL Project ID
30515

Abstract

Research on Lead Magnesium Niobate - Lead Titanate (PMN-PT), a single crystal piezoelectric material, has been intensified largely due to superior piezoelectric properties over the existing piezoelectric ceramics. The PMN-PT single crystals can be used in wide range of applications, such as medical ultrasound, sonar transducers, actuators and energy harvesting elements for wireless sensors. PMN-PT single crystal boules have been successfully grown at Center for Materials Research (CMR) facility around the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) using a unique self seeding high pressure Bridgman (HPB) technique [1]. Being an anisotropic crystal, the piezoelectric properties vary with the orientation of the single crystal. The piezoelectric property in transverse mode (d31 and k31) was found to be better in <011> than in <001> oriented samples [2].
