Laboratory Studies of Atmospheric processing of sea salt.

Abstract

We propose two different projects:

1. Mechanism of the Reaction of NaCl and NaBr with O3 and OH.

Previous studies in our laboratory of the reaction of OH with deliquesced NaCl particles showed that the Cl2 generated was far greater than expected from uptake of OH into the particles and oxidation of chloride ions in the bulk liquid. We proposed a reaction of OH with Cl- at the air-water interface as a key part of the mechanism. However, we were not able to measure the change in the particle composition in those experiments. Our mechanism involves replacement of Cl- by OH- as the reaction proceeds.

We propose to work with Alex Laskin and Dan Gaspar to search for the production of NaOH in the reactions of gas phase OH with NaCl and NaBr using environmental SEM and TOF-SIMS.
