Probing a Single Crystal Wide Gap Dilute Magnetic Semiconductor:
Mn doped β-Ga2O3

EMSL Project ID
32190

Abstract

We propose to study a unique dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) compound with Particle Induce X-ray Emission (PIXE); bulk single crystals of manganese doped gallium oxide have been prepared and shown to exhibit ferromagnetism at room temperature. This system is of acute interest to the field of dilute magnetic systems because studies of single crystal dilute magnetic systems are scarce, if they exist. Using PIXE at EMSL we will study the concentration and degree of lattice incorporation of transition metals (Mn and Cr) in bulk single crystals of Ga2O3. These parameters will add fundamentally to our understanding of the ferromagnetism in this material.
