Characterization of Biologically Reduced U Particles

EMSL Project ID
3260

Abstract

In collaboration with Dr. Jim Amonette (PNNL, we are working on reduction of Uranium(VI) under sulfate reducing conditions in the presence of iron minerals. U(VI) dissolved in a growth medium was reacted under anoxic conditions with a mixture of hematite and quartz. After reduction by SRB, analysis by U L3-edge XANES spectra of reduced U, both liquid filtrate and associated with solids, yielded typical U(IV) spectra. We want to further characterize reduced U using HR-TEM on samples from the liquid filtrate and associated with solids.
