Relating nanostructure to composite properties via 3D TEM imaging

EMSL Project ID
32701

Abstract

Our previous proposal (PNNL 27090a) was unsuccessful in imaging CNXLs in polymer matrices, but was successful in obtaining excellent images of CNXL aerogels. We therefore propose to utilize cellulose nanocrystal aerogels as the imaging subject. The goal of this project will be to obtain 3D images of a series of CNXL aerogels that have been treated with various polymer systems, obtain macro-scale mechanical property data and to then model them using the material point method. Thus, with the acquisition of 3D images of various aerogel systems, we should be able to unravel some of the mystery surrounding interfacial and percolation effects in high aspect ratio nanocomposites.
