FTS Scan of Keck Iodine Cell

EMSL Project ID
33595

Abstract

We request time in March 2009 on the Bruker IFS 125HR high resolution Fourier transform spectrometer to obtain a calibration spectrum of an iodine cell. We require a spectral resolution of 0.02 cm-1. The iodine cell is used on the HIRES spectrometer at the W. M. Keck Telescope by astronomers searching for planets orbiting nearby stars. A high resolution FTS scan is needed to establish precise wavelength solutions and to model the intrinsic point spread function of the spectrometer optics. The FTS spectrometer in EMSL at PNNL is one of the few instruments available to the research community. This scan will improve our Doppler velocity precision and our ability to detect low mass planets. The scan will be used to re-analyze hundreds of thousands of past observations as well as future observations.
