Differential Anomalous Scattering Determination of Co in Anatase in Co-Doped TiO2
EMSL Project ID

Abstract
Diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) are of considerable interest as these materials may be useful for spintronic devices. Co-doped TiO2 is a DMS with a reportedly high Curie temperature, well above room temperature. However, the origin of the ferromagnetism in this material remains controversal. We intend to use synchrotron x-ray diffraction to determine the amount of Co on lattice sites in Co-doped anatase TiO2. By measuring the intensity of several anatase diffraction peaks as a function of x-ray energy near the Co K edge (7709 eV), we will be able to determine the concentration of Co atoms on Ti sites in the anatase structure. This method is similar to differential anomalous scattering [Howland et al., Phys Rev B 39, 9017 (1989)]. The Calculations indicate we should have sensitivity at the few percent level.
