Ion-Solid Interactions in Ceramics

EMSL Project ID
3448a

Abstract

Experimental project to investigate defects, defect properties, defect processes, and the evolution of nanostructures and phase transformations in ceramics under ion irradiation. The work primarily involves studies of single crystals where the defects induced by ion irradiaton are characterized in situ using ion-beam analysis methods, or ex situ using electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The goal is to develop a fundamental understanding of defects and dynamic defect processes in complex ceramic structures, including defect/property relationships, the effects of defects on transport processes and solid-state phase transformations, and the aggregation of defects to form complex nanostructures.
