TEM Study of Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Polymer-Derived Ceramic Composites

Abstract

Carbon nanotube (CNT), the strongest material has ever been discovered, is very promising as reinforcement for composites applications. However, processing control to achieve uniform nano-scale dispersion and orientation of the CNTs in conventional ceramics remains as a huge technical challenge. In this research we plan to use polymer-derived ceramics (PDC) as matrix to prepare CNT-ceramic composites. The advantage of PDC is that it starts with liquid phase polymer precursors so that the processing can be easily controlled. It is critical to study the structure and interfaces between CNT and ceramic phase for the fully understanding the properties of obtained CNT composites. In this proposal, we propose to use both conventional and high resolution TEM to study the CNT-PDC composites. We expect that the results will be published in journals. We are asking for two weeks of Facility time during May to Aug., 2003.
