Development of Monte-Carlo simulation method for quantitative analysis of radiation damage in irradiated crystals.

Abstract

A complex approach for the analysis of radiation damage in irradiated crystals including: structural analysis of defects, reproduction of a given defect structure for Monte Carlo simulations of backscattering process and RBS/C measurements of defects concentration will be developed. The experimental spectra will be fitted with various defect structures in order to obtain quantitative information about their concentration and to confirm or exclude various defect structures suggested by MD calculations. The project is based on combination of EMSL experimental possibilities with Monte Carlo simulation code developed in Poland. The use of MC simulations allows one also to tremendously extend the possibilities of the interpretation of RBS/C spectra towards: crystals irradiated in high energy range, defect analysis in complex, multielemental materials and defect analysis in given sublattice of the crystals. The method has been successfully checked on data recorded on various materials, such as: Si, ZrO2, MgAl2O4, GaN, GaP, InP, SiC and pyrochlores irradiated with ions having the energy from 50 keV up to several GeV.
