Iron mineral and chromium reduction by Cellulomonas spp.

Abstract

The Center for Biofilm Engineering (CBE) at Montana State University (MSU) in collaboration with the Center for Multiphase Environmental Research (CMER) at Washington State University (WSU) and the Biotechnology group at the Idaho National Environmental and Engineering Laboratory (INEEL) is studying the influence of a group of Gram positive organisms on the subsurface fate of heavy metals and organic contaminants. The organisms were derived from Cr(VI)-reducing enrichments and subsequently identified as Cellulomonas spp. The MSU/WSU/INEEL research team is currently investigating the influence of these isolates on the fate of Cr(VI) in the presence and absence of iron minerals. Additionally we are assessing the ability of these strains to reduce a series of metals in the absence of supplemental carbon sources. We are currently investigating the influence of these isoloates on the mineralogy of iron minerals and the reaction of secondary iron mineral phases with common environmental contaminants such as Cr(VI), U(VI), chlorinated aliphatics, and explosives.
