Characterization of noble metal catalysts for hydrogen production and purification in fuell cell applications
EMSL Project ID

Abstract
The work is in the area of heterogeneous catalysis, inparticular, the production and purification of hydrogen for fuel cell
applications. Currently, we are examining the selective oxidation of CO in hydrogen-rich streams over supported mono- and bi-metallic noble-metal
catalysts. The catalyst preparation techniques employed in our work include
standard impregnation techniques using regular precursors, as well as the
utilization of preformed bimetallic precursors stabilized by dendrimers or
other organic ligands. We would like to charcaterize some of these catalysts by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) measurements in conjunction with high-resolution transmission electron
(HRTEM). The following table
provides a summary of different catalysts samples that we want to
characterize.
(1) Incipient wetness impregnation using standard chloride or nitrate precursors - Pt-Ru catalysts of different Pt:Ru ratios
(2)Wet impregnation using dendrimer-stabilized precursors - Pt-Ru, Pt-Sn,
Pt-Ru-Sn, and Pt-Ru-Mo
(3) Wet impregnation using cluster-derived organometallic precursor - Pt-Ru and Pt-Au
