LASER-INDUCED NEUTRAL METAL ATOM DESORPTION FROM MAGNESIUM OXIDE AND LITHIUM FLUORIDE PROBED VIA OPTICAL SPECTROSCOPIES

EMSL Project ID
3525

Abstract

The aim of this project is to combine the expertise found at EMSL (Ken Beck) on defect promoted laser desorption in alkaline halides and alkaline-earth oxides and the expertise at the Instituto de Optica (CSIC) Madrid in optical spectroscopic techniques to study the dynamics of the desorption and ablation processes induced by UV lasers. The project will be focused to determine the underlying mechanisms for neutral Mg photoemission in MgO. As a comparative and complementary study, the alkali halide lithium fluoride (LiF) will also be studied as a wide bandgap cubic crystal through which Li metal desorption can occur.
