Electrochemical and AFM/STM Study of TiO2 (Anatase) Film on SrTiO3 Substrate

Abstract
We propose to carry out electrochemical and AFM/STM microscopic investigation of highly organized TiO2 (anatase) layer deposited on conductive SrTiO3 substrate. With reference to our informal preliminary discussions with Dr. Zdenek Dohnalek, the anatase layers will be grown epitaxially in the PNNL lab. The TiO2/SrTiO3 electrode will present an alternative to bulk anatase crystals studied by ourselves (see J.Am.Chem.Soc. 118, 6716, 1996 and J.Electrochem.Soc. 147, 1467, 2000). We expect that the PNNL-made electrode will show higher perfection of the surface morphology and better chemical purity compared to the bulk anatase crystals grown by the chemical transport reactions. This is promising for imaging of the surface changes upon electrochemical treatment. The electrochemical methodology used will be similar to that employed in our JACS paper cited above. In addition to electrochemical tests, we plan to carry out detailed AFM/STM investigation of the electrode surface. Attempts will be made to investigate morphological changes in-situ.
