Chalcogenide Surface Science

EMSL Project ID
37511

Abstract

The objective of this work is to use XPS to study the surface chemistry of IR transparent chalcogenide fibers that have undergone photo-induced and/or opto-mechanical failures. Raytheon Missile Systems is using these fibers to develop IR counter-measure devices for national defense purposes. They are under an urgent deadline to develop these devices, and have been unable to solve this photo-induced, opto/mechanical failure problem on their own. They have requested PNNL to assist them in this effort, based on the unique capabilities in EMSL and the PI's expertise in chalcogenide materials regarding previous research in photo-induced degredation of As2S3 (a chalcogenide glass) (Please see EMSL related publications)
