XPS Analysis of Corrosion Protective Paint Systems for Al Alloys Based on Mg-Rich Primers

EMSL Project ID
38797

Abstract

The goal of the proposed research is spectroscopic investigation of Mg corrosion products and Mg-rich primer interfaces by virtue of XPS analysis. To date, no XPS analyses have been performed on Mg-rich coatings. The information on chemical and electronic states of metal-primer and primer-topcoat interfaces is currently unavailable. XPS data will allow NDSU researches to gain insight into the mechanism of corrosion protection afforded by Mg-rich primer and to further the development of the next-generation anti-corrosion protective coating systems for USAF aircraft.
