Solid State NMR Studies on Structures and Oxidation Behavior of
Amorphous SiAlCN Ceramics
EMSL Project ID
4092
Abstract
The PI propose to use solid state NMR in EMSL of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to study the structures and oxidation behavior of amorphous SiAlCN ceramics synthesized by thermal decomposition of polyaluminasilazanes. SiAlCN is a new class of high temperature ceramics. Previous studies in the PI?s laboratory at the University of Central Florida revealed that the materials possess extremely high resistance to oxidation and hot-corrosion of NaCl and water vapor. Further development and optimization of the materials could lead to many important applications for energy, space and many other industries, including environmental barrier coatings, high temperature fibers/matrices for compositions, extreme environmental MEMS-based sensors. Two experiments will be performed in this research to characterize: (i) structures of SiAlCN annealed at different temperatures higher than their pyrolysis temperature and (ii) structures of oxide scale formed on the surfaces of SiAlCN ceramics. The first experiment will help to understand the structural relaxation behavior of this novel class of covalent glasses, which holds a key to understand their thermal stability and creep behavior. The objective of the second experiment is to understand the novel oxidation behavior observed in the materials.
