Effect of Structure and Impurities on Charge Transfer Reactions in Solid State Electrochemical Devices

EMSL Project ID

Abstract

We are investigating epitaxial thin films of SOFC cathodes on single crystal substrates and polycrystalline thin films on yttria doped zirconia substrates. The goal is to use these films to perform electrochemical, structural, and spectroscopic studies to gain insight into the oxygen reduction mechanisms that are operative under fuel cell operating conditions. The tools we employ to study these films include impedance spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, TEM, x-ray emission and absorption spectroscopies and x-ray photoemission. The goal is to correlate the cathode reduction polarization resistances with the compositional and structural changes occurring at the cathode - gas and cathode-electrolyte interfaces. Such insight is expected to lead to higher performance cathode materials for solid oxide fuel cells.
