Wavelength Calibration and Line Profile Analysis of Iodine Vapor in the A - X Visible Band System in Observatory Reference Cells

EMSL Project ID
45391

Abstract

We are requesting instrument time on the Bruker IFS 125HR high resolution Fourier transform spectrometer located in the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The purpose of the request is to measure a calibration spectrum of the A - X band system (480 to 630 nm) of iodine. In 2009, we collaborated with Dr. Thomas Blake to obtain scans of iodine cells with this instrument with a spectral resolution of 0.02 cm-1. A complete FTS scan required 384 co-added scans, taking 10 hours to build up a signal-to-noise ratio of 1000:1 for the desired resolution. For this project, we would like to test the impact of different column densities of iodine on our Doppler analysis and obtain FTS scans for 7 iodine cells (and one empty calibration cell) for instrument development. We will contract with Battelle/PNNL to pay for Dr. Blake's time.
