Belle Computing Center at PNNL

Abstract
The Belle collaboration, consisting of 437 scientists from 63 institutes in 15 countries, is supported by a centralized computing facility at KEK, where almost all data processing, Monte Carlo (MC) production and physics analysis is performed. In the aftermath of the giant earthquake and tsunami, electrical power at KEK is unstable and limited. As a result it is impossible to run the Belle computers and carry out the physics analysis of the 1 ab--1 data sample. The impact on the scientific output of Belle is severe. There are more than 100 scientific analyses in progress that are published at rate of ~30 per year. The work on these analyses is severely impaired by lack of access to KEK computing and the contribution of Belle to international conferences and journal publications will be severely reduced if emergency action is not taken. KEK has requested emergency assistance from Nagoya University, which is located in a region of Japan that has a stable and separate electrical grid. Nagoya has been asked to provide some computing resources, and also to host some CPU and file servers previously deployed at KEK. However, the amount of CPU and storage from KEK exceeds the capability of current infrastructure at Nagoya and the number of additional users that can be accommodated is limited. Only about ten new high priority accounts will be created at Nagoya to enable the most mature analyses to proceed to publication. In parallel to this, KEK has requested emergency computing assistance from PNNL to provide multi-user support (~400 users) for the full Belle collaboration and up to 80% of the computing/storage of the Belle computing at KEK – as soon as possible – through the end of Japan Fiscal Year (JFY1) 2012. PNNL has extensive high performance computing capability, having fielded HPC systems ranked at #5 and #20 on the Top500 list of supercomputers worldwide. As part of the Belle collaboration, PNNL is uniquely positioned to provide the requested assistance. PNNL is the lead DOE laboratory on the Belle II upgrade. In contrast to Belle, Belle II has adopted a distributed computing model based on the grid and PNNL is planning to host the US Belle II Computing Center. The emergency computing deployment for Belle at PNNL will have a large scientific impact and allow the timely completion and publication of ~30 publications in Phys. Rev. D. and Phys. Rev. Lett. in JFY11, as well as enable the required work to proceed on the science to be published in JFY12. More than half of these publications will be by Ph.D. students. Thus this assistance is of exceedingly high importance to the educational progress of a large number of future research scientists worldwide.
