Spin reorientation transition and its structural origin in epitaxial Fe/MnPd bilayers

Abstract

The proposal seeks to understand the origin of spin reorientation at the interface of exchange-biased epitaxial metal films. We propose detailed crystallographic characterization of the epitaxial nature of the interface between Fe/MnPd bilayers to distinguish between the two hypotheses put forward to explain the spin reorientation transition we previously reported in similar materials. We require high resolution diffraction scans to determine the interface strains and thermal expansion measurements of the MnPd lattice. We will correlate these with magnetic properties obtained at the University of Washington to obtain a deeper understanding and resolve the spin reorientation mechanism.
