Identification of Mercury-Reactive Species in Natural Organic Matter
EMSL Project ID
48251
Abstract
This study aims to utilize the state-of-the-art Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometers (FTICR-MS) to identify the specific molecules in naturally dissolved organic matter (DOM) reacting with mercury (Hg) and thus to understand factors that stabilize bioavailable Hg and its transformation to neurotoxic methylmercury in the environment. The work attempts to resolve a significant knowledge gap regarding the mechanisms of mercury transformation and behavior in the environment in order to predict and mitigate their adverse impact to humans.
