The Culture Collection of Microorganisms from Extreme Environments: A novel PNNL resource for biology and geomicrobiology at the national EMSL User Facility

EMSL Project ID
48774

Abstract

PNNL is home to the CCMEE (Culture Collection of Microorganisms from Extreme Environments), a unique microbial extremophile culture collection that contains samples collected from hot and cold deserts, permafrost, ocean, inland seas, hypersaline and acidic waters, hot springs, and habitats exposed to high solar irradiance. To develop the CCMEE as an EMSL capability and/or public resource at PNNL that supports the EMSL/PNNL missions and aligns with the programmatic priorities of DOE BER and other federal clients of PNNL requires progress be made on the following two objectives: 1) optimize and conduct efficiently all of the routine protocols required to maintain and safeguard the quality and integrity of the collection, and 2) identify, pursue, and enable high-impact research that is consistent with the programmatic priorities of DOE BER and/or other PNNL clients in ways that transform the world through courageous discovery and innovation. This proposal covers the activities associated with the first objective, which is required to achieve the second. Note that additional EMSL User proposals will be submitted for access to the user facility capabilities for externally funded research projects.
