Abstract
We propose to utilize EMSL’s ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry and spectroscopy capabilities to determine the composition of DOC from subtropical wetland oils, which have been incubated for one and half year. It is important to quantify and qualify dynamics of organic matter decomposition products (i.e. CO2, CH4 and DOC) in warmer peatlands, which remains poorly represented in ecosystem and climate models. Specifically, this experiment is designed to test the direct links between DOC composition and the concomitant greenhouse gas (CO2 and CH4) production mechanisms as a function of warming. Integration of this information in next-generation climate models would be useful for improved understanding of wetland C stocks.
