Spatially resolving light elements with high resolution analysis for waste forms characterization

EMSL Project ID
49171

Abstract

The primary goal of this user proposal is to gain access to the unique instruments at EMSL that we need to identify and spatially resolve light elements such as Li and B. Two such techniques for doing this are electron probe microanalysis with wavelength dispersive spectroscopy (EPMA-WDS) and nano-resolution secondary ion mass spectrometry (nano-SIMS). Additionally, Li-containing crystalline phases can be spatially mapped with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Proof-of-concept experiments on PNNL-made specimens with these instruments have proven useful and further experimentation is needed to fully evaluate the techniques for our applications.
