PREMIER CAT - Liquid Phase EM analysis of the formation of CoCO3/Co(OH)(CO3)0.5 nanoparticles in solution

EMSL Project ID

Abstract

Cobalt (Co) nanoparticles are important catalyst for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, which is a chemical process that converts a mixture of carbon monoxides and hydrogen into hydrocarbons. The Co nanoparticles are produced through the reduction of from cobalt (hydr)oxide nanostructures, and their size and morphology have a big impact on their catalytic performance. In this study, the formation of cobalt (hydroxide) carbonate (CoCO3/Co(OH)(CO3)0.5) –a precursor for Co nanoparticles- will be investigared by liquid phase (LP) (scaning) transmission electron microscopy ((S)TEM). The LP-(S)TEM will be used to characterise in-situ the morphological and structural development of CoCO3/Co(OH)(CO3)0.5 nanoparticles in solution. For this we use ammonium carbonate diffusion method, in which CoCO3/Co(OH)(CO3)0.5 precipitation is induced by exposing a solution of Co2+ ions to the vapor (NH3 and CO2) released due to the decomposition of solid ammonium carbonate ((NH4)2CO3) at room temperature.
