Infrared Nanoscopic Imaging of Structural and Globular Proteins
EMSL Project ID
49608
Abstract
This work uses infrared near-field optical spectroscopy to investigate the secondary structure of fiber-forming and globular proteins with nanoscale spatial resolution. These protein classes are difficult to study with conventional structural characterization tools, and this approach will provide access to information about protein conformation, organization, and interaction with interfaces. Our work will place the interpretation of near-field spectra in biological systems on a firm grounding, extending current characterization techniques for biological materials, in line with the mesoscale science challenges as put forward by the Department of Energy.
