Determination of Interstitial and Interface components of chrome coatings

EMSL Project ID
50354

Abstract

Interfacial and interstitial components can be introduced into electrochemical deposited chrome plate, either intentionally or as a side effect of contamination. We are interested in determining the composition and levels of interstitial and interfacial components within electrochemically deposited chrome on steel substrates. Preliminary analysis of related substrates by XPS and Auger analysis has shown significant levels of carbon contamination both interstitially and interfacially. Sub-micron spatial resolution provided by TOF-SIMS analysis is required for analysis of interfacial contamination and analysis of the bulk chrome and steel by XPS is desired.
