MEASURING COMPOSITION AND SPECIATION OF CO2 IN CAPTURE CAPTURE SOLVENTS USING HIGH-PRESSURE NMR.

EMSL Project ID
50694

Abstract

Carbon dioxide is one of the most simple and abundant molecules on earth as it plays a critical role in biological lifecycles as a feedstock for plants to chemically store energy in hydrocarbons and conversely a byproduct of hydrocarbon combustion. However, CO2 is kinetically and thermodynamically unreactive, thus any energy-related process of either capturing or converting CO2 is a grand challenge. In this proposal, we want to be able to measure the speciation of the gas and liquid phases of carbon capture solvents. while at the same time, measure liquid and gas phase composition to provide a complete mass balance of the solvent and gas being treated at expected operating conditions. This proposal would provide useful data on how NMR could be used to measure vapor-liquid equilibria curves, kinetics, and diffusion coefficients that can be applied to any solvent-based gas separations or chemical process.
