TEM investigation of twinned structures in minerals

EMSL Project ID
51707

Abstract

Twin structures are widespread in natural and synthetic crystalline materials, leading to various structures and morphologies that significantly affect physical and chemical properties. However, the investigation of twin formation and evolution is mainly focused on metal materials, because of relative simpler chemical compositions and crystal structures in metals compared with that in minerals and limited TEM imaging technologies for light atoms. Recent advances in TEM technologies have allowed atomic scale studies of the complicated interface structures, providing new insights on investigation of twin structures evolution under various conditions (such as high temperatures and/or gas environments). Therefore, the aim of this research is to apply aberration corrected TEMs to investigate twinning mechanisms, complicated twin interface structures, and twin evolution in minerals under various environments and provide guides to control twinned structures for various applications.
