CT imaging of Rugged Particle Tracers

EMSL Project ID
51740

Abstract

Tracing the flow of solid matter requires elements with uniquely identifiable signatures. Pigments tagged with luminescent core-shell nanoparticles (CSNPs) can have tunable photoluminescence (PL) dependent on the material composition and core/shell thicknesses. Incorporation of the CSNPs into a matrix will enable identification (ID) of pieces originating from the tagged material. The cores and shells luminesce at different wavelengths enabling unique luminescent signatures. Control of the core and shell thicknesses allows for a tunable emission spectrum. The particles are ruggedized with thick silica encapsulate to protect the luminescent inner architecture during finite periods of elevated temperature.
