Complexation of Th(IV) by Organic Acids in Aqueous Solution

EMSL Project ID
5291

Abstract

Quantitative one-dimensional 13C and 1H NMR spectra are desired to elucidate the stoichiometry and structure of solution-state complexes formed by Th(IV) with gluconate and citrate. The organic acids may be present in several different stable forms (both bound to the metal and unbound) with NMR spectra differing in only subtle ways from one form to the next, and thus in anticipation of the spectral overlap this suggests, we request that these measurements be performed at 11.7 Tesla magnetic fields or higher for maximum dispersion. These results are required as part of the current PNNL EMSP project, ?Chemical Speciation of Americium, Curium, and Selected Tetravalent Actinides in High Level Waste: Predictive Modeling of Phase Partitioning During Tank Processing,? (A. R. Felmy, PI).
