Advanced Microstructural Characterization of Metallic Alloys for Automotive applications

Abstract

Advanced microstructural characterization of next generation propulsion materials and light weight metallic alloys can provide material processing-microstructure-mechanical property relationships. In addition, advanced characterization is also crucial for understanding material degradation when exposed to extreme environments of temperature and/or stress. As a part of this project, Al and Mg alloys for use from room temperature to 350oC and high temperature Ni, Fe based alloys developed for 800-950oC developed through innovative alloy composition selection and advanced processing methods from ORNL will be closely complemented with multimodal microstructural characterization of alloy microstructure using state-of-the-art characterization capabilities such as atom probe tomography (APT) and aberration corrected Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) at EMSL. The advanced characterization capabilities housed in the EMSL provides crucial information for optimizing the alloy design for propulsion applications in automobiles.
