Resolving the element distributions in nanoparticles via atom probe tomography

EMSL Project ID
60504

Abstract

The objective of this proposal is to develop a repeatable, effective coating/encapsulation method that enables the sample preparation and characterization of nanoparticles via atom probe tomography (APT). A specific aim of this work is to be able to analyze nanoparticles generated via laser ablation of a multi-component alloy. The ability to map individual elements at the nanoscale is extremely challenging using traditional approaches such as transmission electron microscopy – energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy; the 3D atomic scale resolution possible via APT is needed. We propose that by understanding the element distributions at the nanoscale, formation mechanisms can be elucidated.
