Operando Magnetic Resonance of the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction over Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Catalysts
EMSL Project ID
61003
Abstract
The economical deployment of hydrogen (H2) as a fuel and chemical precursor will require identifying replacements for expensive platinum-group metals that can catalyze the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), preferably utilizing renewable electricity. Previous research has identified a class of earth-abundant transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanocrystalline (NC) electrocatalytic materials that show great promise for hydrogen generation. This project aims to develop operando magnetic resonance probes for establishing an atomic-scale holistic understanding of the interplay between the structure, chemistry, catalytic activity, and mechanisms of the hydrogen evolution reaction on HER catalysts in real time.
