Understanding coupled chemical-mechanical behaviors in minerals

EMSL Project ID
61035

Abstract

This proposal aims to develop a comprehensive, unified understanding of how applied stress and interfacial chemistry couple to define mineral nanoparticle dissolution, recrystallization, and aggregation, which is important to rock rheology in the Earth’s shallow crust. The obtained results will provide a much-improved ability to interpret measurements of rock formation and deformation and to infer the state of stress in the subsurface, which is the quintessential grand challenge of earth science.
