QUANTUM CALCULATIONS ON A POTASSIUM ION CHANNEL TO TEST A GATING HYPOTHESIS

Abstract

The quantum calculations will allow us to distinguish between a model which depends on mechanical movement of channel protein to provide a capacitative current preceding the opening of the main channel ionic current, and the motion of protons to do this. Earlier work has shown that the initiation of the proton current is possible and should occur. These calculations will test the final step that is required for the protons to open and close the channel gate. Working this out is critical for understanding the mechanism of action of a set of systems that is critical for the functioning of practically all biological cells.
