Crystallization Behavior of Bulk Amorphous Alloy

EMSL Project ID
7196

Abstract

We are working with Zr-based bulk amorphous alloy composition. The glass transition temperature for these alloys are ~400 C and the melting point is ~900 C. We have heat treated these alloys at different temperatures between 300 and 700 C. In our initial SEM observation, we have noticed some precipitates, mostly Cu, Zr and Ni rich. We have also noticed that both the hardness and strength of these alloys change significantly due to heat treatment. Primary aim of our work at EMSL will be to understand these precipitates using FESEM. At higher magnification, we hope to resolve these precipitates better and then look at their composition using EDS.
