Aging of lean NOX traps

EMSL Project ID
8601

Abstract

Lean NOX traps (LNT) ard one of the promising ways of catalytically reducing NOX from lean burn engines, such as diesels. The major problem with these devices is durability. ORNL is currently conducting accelerated aging tests on bench reactor and engine test stands. One issue of issue with accelerated aging is showing not only loss of performance, but also that the mechanisms of deterioration are correlated to field aged samples. This correlation requires careful chemical and structural analysis, for which PNL is well noted. We are proposing a collaborative effort where ORNL ages samples and performs some routine analysis. PNL would apply more sensitive tests to determine chemical structure to help determine what advanced analytical tests should be used.
