Characterization of Cr(III) Solid Phases

EMSL Project ID
8891

Abstract

As a part of an EMSP project, we are developing thermodynamic data for trivalent chromium solid and aqueous species for use in developing technologies to remove Cr from HLW tanks. Our preliminary studies on the solubility of Cr(III) hydroxide in the presence and absence of phosphate and as a function of pH indicate that Cr(III) hydroxide converts to a Cr(III)-phosphate solid in the acidic region. To develop a reliable thermodynamic model for this system, exact nature of the solid phases must be known. We seek collaboration with Jim Young of EMSL to characterize the Cr solids in six different samples from the experiments described above.
