size selected gas-phase soot aerosol oxidation
EMSL Project ID

Abstract
We have been doing size selected gas-phase soot aerosol oxidation studieswhere we electrostatically separate soot particles extracted from a
combustion source. We then measure the kinetics of oxidation. What we
observed was that Diesel soot oxidizes with a significantly lower activation
energy relative to soot from a lab flame. We speculate that small amounts
of metals in an engine act as catalysts. So we added a small amount of iron precursor to a flame and did the experiment on soot oxidation and observed that the activation energy was almost identical to that for Diesel soot. Now we are interested in what does the iron look like in the soot and what valence state the iron is in.
