Structural Genomics of Strongly Conserved Gene Families

EMSL Project ID
1694

Abstract

The fundamental concept of this proposal is that structural homology between functionally related proteins is preserved over longer evolutionary timescales than sequence homology. We propose that 3D structure determination of representative gene products from orphan gene families will, in some cases, reveal structural similarities with proteins of known function, allowing identification of homologies between proteins that cannot be identified by sequence similarity analysis alone.
