Platelet secretome

Abstract

This work is being done in collaboration with Dr. Richard Phipps at University of Rochester Medical Center. His interests are in the study of platelet activation and inflamatory markers, particularly in how it relates to complications associated with diabetes. My (Rick Zangar) interests are in finding biomarkers for cancer. One of the challenges of this work is to eliminate markers that are not disease specific. I believe that proteins released by platelets are likely to be generic markers of inflammation that will be commonly elevated in many diseases, inlcuding cancer. Therefore the basis of this collaboration and the goals of this work is two-fold. 1) To identify markers of platelet activation and to understand diabetic complications. 2) To prepare a list of proteins that are likely to be elevated in disease but unlikely to be useful biomarkers. This work is supported by separate grants from NIH to Drs. Zangar and Phipps.
